What do the numbers and letters on plastic bottles and containers mean?

  • PET OR PETE
It is probably one of the most commonly used plastic for water and soft drink bottles. It is intended for a single use only, as repeated use can cause bacterial growth. Moreover, these bottles can also release heavy metals and chemicals, which can have a negative impact on the hormonal balance.

  • HDP OR HDPE
This type of plastic is usually used in milk jugs, detergent and oil bottles, toys, and some plastic bags. It is considered to be the safest plastic because it doesn’t release harmful chemicals.

  • PVC OR 3V
It is a soft and flexible plastic used to make clear plastic food wrapping, cooking oil bottles, teething rings, blister packaging for myriad products, and toys for pets and children’s. Moreover, it releases two toxic chemicals, which can potentially affect the hormones in your body. Thus, if you can, avoid this kind of plastic.

  • LDPE
This kind of plastic doesn’t release chemicals, but it cannot be used for bottles. You should know that you should not buy food which is packed in this plastic.

  • PC OR NON-LABELED PLASTIC
This kind of plastic is usually used in the production of sports water bottles and food containers. Furthermore, it is considered to be the most dangerous kind of plastic because the chemicals it contains can leak into food and beverages.
