Checking Your Phone And Computer Right Before Bed Could Put Your Life In Danger

If you are one of those people who are having a hard time sleeping at night, then it might be time to stop falling asleep with your gadgets. Study after study after study has shown that light given off by electronics affects our sleep health.

The consensus is that the blue light that LED screens give off can slow or halt the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals our brain that it's time for bed. Without melatonin, we stay awake and alert, keeping us up later than intended.

That’s kind of scary considering most, if not all, of us are using either computers or phones (sometimes both) before bedtime. At night, light throws the body's biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of whack. Because artificial light tricks the body into thinking it is still day time, melatonin production is suppressed.

Studies have shown that people with low melatonin are more prone to cancer and various ailments because this vital hormone actually helps protect our cells from damage. Aside from cancer, melatonin suppression also leads to heart disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and impaired immune systems.

How To Prevent Melatonin Suppression?

Dimming devices at night as much as possible in order to minimize melatonin suppression is highly recommended. Also, one should limit the amount of time spent using these devices prior to bedtime. Experts advised that these devices should not be used for more than an hour.

Furthermore, if possible, you could turn the lights off while sleeping. But if you can’t sleep without some luminescence, use red night light as it was known to be the least disruptive in the melatonin production.

During day time, make sure to get plenty of natural bright light from the sun to help adjust the circadian rhythm accordingly.

The human body has not yet fully adapted to the fast changes in technology and it could only cope with as much as it could handle. Though, we have plenty of different types of gadgets and electronics to keep us happy and help us have an easier life, it seems that these are taking a toll on our bodies that might last forever. So, be aware.
